Newton County, Georgia,
was established in 1821 and was created out of parts of Henry, Jasper, and Walton
Counties.
It is situated in the central part of the state and contains 279 square miles.
The county is drained by the Yellow and Alcopahatchee Rivers, branches of the Ocmulgee River.
The population in 1840 was just 11,628 people. By 2010 the county had grown to 99,958 people.
The county seat is Covington.
The first few episodes of "The Dukes of Hazzard" were filmed in Covington as well as the
popular hit series "In The Heat Of The Night".
